Exterior Walls

Exterior walls are comprised of multiple components and systems that are required to be properly integrated to control water leakage from rain and snow melt, air infiltration, and vapor movement.  They are also constructed to provide adequate thermal insulation and to resist deterioration.  DBI has extensive knowledge of all exterior wall assembly types and the building science that governs their performance.

  • Masonry including clay brick, concrete masonry units (CMU), limestone, terra cotta and stone. Wall types include solid multi-wythe, cavity drainage, single-wythe, and brick or stone veneer construction.
  • Adhered manufactured stone masonry veneer systems including lightweight cast concrete stone products and thin brick.
  • Exterior Insulation and Finish Systems (EIFS).
  • Exterior Portland Cement Plaster (Stucco).  Wall types include proprietary one-coat stucco systems, code regulated two-coat direct applied stucco systems, and code regulated three-coat stucco systems over protected exterior sheathing.
  • Direct-applied Finish Systems (DEFS).  Wall types include synthetic finish coats, tile, thin-brick, and embedded stone surfaces generally installed over exterior cement board substrates.
  • Precast concrete façade panels.
  • Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete (GFRC) cladding panels.
  • Metal cladding panels.
  • Wood, aluminum, vinyl, and cement board siding systems.
  • Exterior wall sheathing products including paper faced and glass mat faced gypsum board sheathing and cement board sheathing.
  • Membrane and liquid applied air and moisture barrier products and systems.
  • Vapor retarder products and systems.
